While the media likes to tell us about fabulous high tech 3D printing applications, the real impact will be felt much closer to our lives than we think. These days, you can search 3D CAD models online for a specific need in a website like thingiverse.com then get 3D printed parts delivered to your door by ordering them online through a local 3D printing supplier using 3D HUBS like D.R. Engineering Sol's Hub.
We live in an online world and that makes 3D printing technology really accessible. 3D printing gives the end user the ability to go from a concept, to design and then a product or prototype in a matter of hours. The applications are enormous. Look around in our homes, there will be many places where you can use 3D printing, for example, custom designed space or time saving solutions, unique decorative shapes, repairing broken parts, toys and puzzles for kids, etc. Here you can see the application of a 3D printing custom design we made in our home. We chose to 3D print a new kitchen rubbish bin collection. It’s not the most glamorous part of our kitchen, but a space in need of a solution.
Problem:
We have a small awkward space under our kitchen sink. There is plumbing and two shelves under the sink which makes it a small and difficult space to fit a rubbish bin.
We will eventually renovate and re-do the kitchen, but in the meantime, we had a need for a more workable rubbish bin solution. We wanted the bin to fit recycled plastic shopping bags for liners with spaces for rubbish, compost and soft plastic recycling. Surprisingly we haven’t been able to find something that fits these needs and space in any of the regular shops.
Solution:
D.R. Engineering Solutions created this design based on modular parts that fit perfectly together; then printed them in ABS plastics using the Upbox 3D printer.
The 3D printed rubbish bin was installed on a veneered particle board to allow it to slide forwards and backwards with 3D printed guides.
The rubbish bin has been installed already it has been working really well.
It fits well in its space and help to separate the rubbish by types, just what we wanted.
Just think how the wonders of 3D printing can be used in your home, in creation of 3D printing custom solutions. To apply the technology, simply produce a concept, develop a 3D CAD model, then 3D print it. You can print it on your own 3D printer or use a local service like DR Engineering Solutions.
D.R. Engineering Solutions can turn your concept into a 3D CAD model, 3D print and deliver at a fraction of the cost of traditional manufacturing.
